What happens when slightly overweight cubicle dwellers want to lose weight independently? A competition, that’s what. There’s nothing like a friendly competition to stimulate motivation. It kicked off Monday, October 03. The rules are simple: weigh in every Friday morning, whoever loses the most (percentage) by December 31 is the winner. What does the winner get? Self satisfaction, glory, adoration and maybe a beer.

Goal

Motivation

I have a 7 day Caribbean cruise in December. I'm shooting for a bit less gut before my winter swimsuit season.

Game plan

I exercise plenty but have picked up a few bad habits recently. A mocha and a cinnamon roll for breakfast will undo pretty much any amount of jogging and biking. Doing a bit better come mealtime should do the trick.

Non-negotiable

I won't eat meat so no crazy cave man diet like Jon. Also cheese.

Goal

Motivation

I used to love going to the gym and lifting weights. Then I got burnt out and lazy. I need to get back to the good ol’ days, or at least the respectable days.

Game plan

I hate running, so I plan on walking a lot. I also plan on taking advantage of the gym in our apartment complex. Sodas will be replaced with water. Cry. Salads will be a dining staple.

Non-negotiable

I don't think anything is really off the table here.

Motivation

See my beautiful feet again. Find out if there’s anything to this whole “eat less, exercise more” diet fad.

Game plan

Increased road cycling, treadmillery, dog-running, chasing toddlers (my own), general sharper active lifestyle decisions.

Non-negotiable

Jasmine rice with every spice in the rack, pineapples, jalapenos, O2, H2O.

Goal

155 lbs.

Motivation

I always seem to reminisce about being in shape as a 145 lb., 19-year-old lifeguard. I want to get back to that, and stop living in the “glory days.” I also might have ran my mouth to some friends about being able to get to 155 – oops.

Game plan

Lifting weights and running five days a week, Taekwondo four nights a week, and picking up some sweet gymnastic skills twice a week. For the most part, I’ll loosely be following the Ketogenic diet.

Non-negotiable

I refuse to give up dairy products, but I can temporarily part with delicious Blizzards®. However, I can’t discard my weekly trip to So Long Saloon. Also, “Donut Fridays” isn't going anywhere, although the best place to buy donuts in town remains to be seen.

Goal

160 lbs.

Motivation

During this competition I plan to lose about 15 pounds to bring me to 165. After high school and college I got too lazy and got way out of shape and overweight.

Game plan

I hope to correct this trend by eating better, eating less, and exercising more.

Non-negotiable

I’ll be giving up a lot of things, but beer won’t be one of them. To make it worse, I only drink craft beer so this will be a challenge. I’m anxious to see if I can make my goal while still not giving up the things I love.

Start

214.2 lbs.

Goal

190 lbs.

Motivation

Between June 2006 and June 2007 I lost 57 pounds, starting at 250 and getting down to 193. I did it by eating less and doing more (outdoor kendo in 95°+ heat anyone?). Once I stopped eating less and starting doing less the weight came back. Time to remake that lifestyle change and stick to it.

Game plan

Twice weekly swimming at the Natatorium and twice weekly bicycle riding will count as the doing more part, with smaller meal time portions and no snacks as the eating less part.

Non-negotiable

Bryer's Heath Bar Crunch Ice Cream, and the odd can of Vernor's Ginger Ale.

Goal

190 lbs.

Motivation

It won’t be long until I’m trying to keep up with a increasingly mobile baby boy. I imagine I will need cat-like reflexes, a quick step, and all the energy I can muster. I won’t be able to do it with a Wendy’s Spicy Asiago Ranch Chicken Club boring its way through my internals.

Game plan

Say good bye to soda. I drink way too much of it – the good stuff too! Diet soda is for fat girls. Reduce the frequency of dining out. Having an infant to care for may solve this issue for me.

Non-negotiable

Pizza Hut’s all stuffed-crust Tuesday lunch buffet. Three pounds of salted meats and bread injected with seven pounds of cheese is surely part of any healthy diet. Right?
